Human Trust: The Powerful Skill That Keeps You Essential

You are scrolling through your phone late at night, watching another video about how AI is about to replace half the jobs on the internet. There is a knot in your stomach. If a machine can write the emails, build the marketing copy, and answer every question a beginner might ask, what is left for you to build?

I get why that thought creeps in. If I’m honest, I’ve had it myself. I’ve sat at my kitchen table wondering whether the skills I’m still learning will even matter by the time I’ve learned them.

Here’s the part that calms me down: human trust is something AI still can’t build for you. Every big shift in technology has worked the same way. It removes some jobs, and it makes certain other things worth far more than they used to be. The car didn’t just replace the horse. It created garages, roadside diners, motels, and whole new trades nobody had needed before. AI will do the same thing to online business, and the winners won’t be the ones who panic about what it can do. They’ll be the ones who notice what it can’t.

What AI Actually Threatens

Let’s be clear about what’s really at risk, because pretending nothing has changed helps nobody.

AI can answer questions. It can write a passable blog post. It can summarise, draft, and outline faster than any of us ever could. Picture a beginner searching how does affiliate marketing work late at night. AI will answer that instantly, in plain language, for free. It has never lost sleep over money, and it never has to live with the consequences of the advice it gives.

If your entire business is ‘I know something you don’t and I’ll type it out for you,’ that business is under real pressure.

But information was never really the product. It was just the packaging.

What It Cannot Touch

What people pay for underneath the information is human trust, judgment, and the feeling that someone understands their exact situation.

An AI can tell a beginner what an email list is. It cannot tell them, with any real weight, ‘I built mine from nothing after my old business ended, and here’s what I’d do differently.’

That’s not a small distinction. It’s the whole business.

Information was never really the product. It was just the packaging.

Think about the people I think about most: beginners overwhelmed by choice, and what I’ve come to call strategy hoppers, jumping from affiliate marketing to dropshipping to coaching without ever landing anywhere. AI doesn’t fix that problem. If anything, it makes it worse, because now there’s even more information available, and even less clarity about which bit of it applies to them.

What fixes it is a person they trust, pointing at the one next step that matters.

Building Things Properly, Not Just Covering Them Up

I spent years restoring sash windows before back and neck surgeries ended that business in 2018. You learn something in a trade like that which never really leaves you. You get the foundations right and use the right tools for the job. Then you fix the actual problem instead of covering it up with a bit of filler and fresh paint.

Online business rewards the same instinct.

A quick AI-generated post can look finished on the surface while the foundation underneath, the actual relationship with the person reading it, is still hollow. It might hold up for a season. It won’t hold up for years.

What holds up is the slower work. Answering the same question honestly, over and over, until the people asking it start to recognise your name. Being the one voice a beginner remembers when they’ve read forty other things that all blurred together.

Curation Is Becoming the Real Skill

Here’s something worth sitting with. The internet doesn’t have a shortage of information anymore. It has a shortage of people willing to sort through it and say, ‘this bit is worth your time, and this bit isn’t.’

That’s a skill you can build starting this week, and it doesn’t require you to be the world’s leading expert on anything.

It just requires you to keep showing up, keep testing what helps the people in front of you, and keep saying so plainly when something didn’t work. I’ve put money into things that didn’t pay off: solo ads early on that cost me somewhere between $2,700 and $3,000, while most of the people who signed up never opened a single email. That’s my own experience, and spend and results will vary for others.

That’s not a story I enjoy telling, but it’s more useful to a beginner than any polished case study, because it’s true.

I’ve written a bit more about what I’ve learned the hard way in other articles I have shared recently, and the pattern keeps repeating: the honest version of the story does more work than the impressive one.

What This Means If You’re Just Starting Out

You might be a complete beginner looking at all this, feeling overwhelmed by the sheer number of directions available. Here is the one thing worth holding onto.

You do not need to out-write AI. You need to out-trust it.

That means picking one small audience, one problem you understand properly, and showing up for it consistently enough that people start to recognise you. It means being willing to say what didn’t work for you, not just what did. It means treating your list and your community as the actual asset, not the content you send them.

None of that is glamorous. Kept going is a phrase I use often, because it’s usually the whole answer.

The Advantage Nobody’s Selling You

Every AI tool being launched this year is being sold on speed. Faster drafts, faster research, faster everything.

Speed was never really the bottleneck for most beginners. Human trust was. And trust is not something a tool can generate for you overnight, no matter how capable it becomes.

That’s the overlooked advantage sitting in plain sight. While everyone else races to produce more content faster, the people who quietly win are building something a machine still cannot fake. That’s a track record with real people, built one honest interaction at a time.

That’s still available to anyone willing to do the slower work. If I’m honest, it might be more available now than it’s been in years, simply because so few people are bothering with it.

Start small. Pick the one audience you understand best. Show up for them properly, and let human trust do the rest.
