How Do You Discover The Real Opportunity Others Have Overlooked?
Most people think the secret to getting ahead online is spotting the next big trend before everyone else does. Find the next platform. Find the next shiny idea. Get there first.
I don’t think that’s true. I say that as someone who has watched plenty of people, myself included at times, jump from one idea to another, never really landing.
You’ve probably felt that same pull yourself.
The people who do well aren’t the ones who found the real opportunity first. They’re the ones who recognised it when it was already sitting right in front of them, and had the patience to stick with it.
If you’ve ever felt overwhelmed by the sheer number of directions an online business could take you, this is for you.
The Trend-Chasing Trap
There’s a particular kind of exhaustion that comes from trying to keep up with everything at once.
One week it’s affiliate marketing. The next it’s dropshipping. Then it’s AI tools, then coaching, then whatever new platform someone’s talking about in a Facebook group.
Nothing wrong with any of those individually. The problem is treating each new idea as the one that finally gets you there, then abandoning it the moment something newer appears.
I suppose you could say that’s the trap. Not a lack of options, but too many of them, and no way of deciding which one deserves your actual attention.
What Steadier People Do Differently
Watch anyone who seems to move calmly through this stuff, rather than bouncing between ideas, and a pattern shows up.
They’re not smarter, and they’re usually not luckier. They just ask a different question. Instead of what’s new, they ask what keeps showing up, over and over, in different places.
That’s a different skill entirely. It’s the difference between noticing noise and noticing a signal.
A real opportunity rarely announces itself. It just keeps quietly proving itself while you’re busy looking somewhere else.
You’ve probably had a moment like that yourself, even if you didn’t recognise it at the time.
The Signal I Ignored For Years
My first ever sale in this world was back in 2007, maybe 2008. I sold a video set on email marketing by Cory Rudl, sold through a classified ad, for £49.
I was in full-time employment at the time, running my sash window restoration business on the side, and I wasn’t fully committed to information publishing.
The pattern is the same one you may be living through right now.
Here’s the part that matters, though. That one sale was a real signal. Proof, sitting right there, that I could sell something in this space.
You might have a similar signal sitting in your own history already, whether or not you’ve noticed it yet.
It took years, and a series of surgeries that ended the trade I’d built with my hands, before I came back to that same signal. I finally did something with it, properly this time.
I’m not saying you need to wait for a crisis. I’m saying the signal you need might already have shown up once, quietly, and you might have walked past it the same way I did.
Building Your Own Filter
If you’re a beginner, or if you recognise yourself as someone who’s jumped between ideas without finding your footing, the fix isn’t more research. It’s a simpler filter.
Before you commit to anything, ask three things.
Has this kept showing up for me, not just once but repeatedly? Do I want to spend real time on it, not just the idea of it? And is there evidence that people are already paying for a solution like it?
If the answer to all three is yes, that’s the real opportunity. Everything else is just noise wearing a convincing outfit.
I’ve written a bit more on other things I’ve picked up along the way. A fair amount of it comes back to this same idea: fewer directions, followed properly, beats a dozen half-started ones.
You’ll likely recognise a few of your own detours in there too.
What This Means If You Feel Like You’re Behind
If you feel like everyone else got there first, I’d gently push back on that.
Most of the people who look like they arrived overnight had been quietly following the same signal for a long time before anyone noticed them.
My confidence that I’d succeed at this business grew gradually, stage by stage, as I worked through my own training. Not overnight, and not because I found some trend nobody else had spotted.
Yours can build the same way, one stage at a time, without needing to have it all figured out before you begin.
The trades taught me something that’s stuck with me here too. You build things properly by getting the foundations right first, not by chasing the newest tool for the job. That’s true whether you’re restoring a sash window or building an online business.
Whatever trade or skill you already know, the same principle probably applies to you too.
I still use the same basic set of tools day to day. eShowcase is one of them, and it’s not glamorous, but it does what I need it to do while I focus on the actual work.
You don’t need anything more elaborate than that to get started either.
Where To Start
If you’re at the beginning of this and you’re not sure which direction is worth your time, that’s a normal place to be. It’s not a sign you’re doing anything wrong.
Start by noticing what’s already come up more than once in your own life, the way that first sale of mine sat there quietly for years before I acted on it.
Something similar may already be waiting for you to notice, in your own experience.
If you want a plainer starting point while you work that out, Nick James put together Six Figures A Year In Information Publishing, a free book that walks through the basics of this direction. It’s written without any of the hype.
It won’t tell you which opportunity is right for you. But it’s a useful, honest look at one that’s worked for people who started exactly where you are now.
You can find it here: Six Figures A Year In Information Publishing.
Whatever you choose, give it long enough to prove itself properly before you decide it isn’t working. That’s usually where the real opportunity was hiding all along.
Best wishes, Dean
